Magome is old Japanese Post Town on the old Nakasendo Road which used to connect Tokyo to Kyoto during the Edo Period (1603-1867). Travelers would stop at towns like Magome to stay the night and for checkpoint inspections as travel was highly regulated in those days.

Fuji Five Lakes Winter Hike
...the view of Mt. Fuji from the north side of the lake is the view you can see on the current 1000 yen bill, which you can compare from the above and below pictures if you happen to have one on you at the moment. Unfortunately I have no control over the clouds or the roughness of the lake, so it's not an exact replica, but you get the idea.

Boating through Geibikei River Gorge
Geibikei is a scenic river gorge in the northern prefecture of Iwate where people can take flat-bottom boats piloted by singing boatmen. The boatmen guide the boats along with poles much with the gondaliers of Venice.
I was back up in Iwate again for festivals (in case you can't tell I have a thing for festivals). One of them was rescheduled later on the weekend so I had to extend my trip.

Snorkel rice could feed millions - Video Report
A new rice plant has been developed which grows "snorkels" when exposed to floods.
A paper in the journal Nature, describes how the plant elongates rapidly in response to being submerged.
One of the scientists, Motoyaki Ashikari from Nagoya University in Japan, said "the impact is huge".
