Col. Sanders rescued from Osaka river after 24 years

A statue of Kentucky Fried Chicken Corp. founder Colonel Sanders was recovered from the Dotonbori River in downtown Osaka 24 years after being thrown there by fans after the Hanshin Tigers won the Japanese pennant in 1985.

Supporters chose to celebrate the victory with The Colonel because they said it resembled Randy Bass, an American hitter for the Tigers at the time.

The Curse of Colonel Sanders

In 1985, Hanshin Tigers beat the Seibu Lions and won their first Japan Series, thanks much to Randy Bass who was the Tiger MVP). Fans were celebrated in the streets. At the Ebisubashi Bridge in Osaka, they would yell out the name of one of a Tigers’ players, and someone who resembling that player would jump off the bridge into the canal. Since there was no white dude resembling Randy Bass they took the local KFC’s Colonel Sanders statue and chucked it into the river. The Tigers have not won the Japan Series since.
