When Picasso met Japan

While Kiyoshi Yamashita — the wandering artist depicted in the famous television series “Hadaka no Taisho Horoki” (Travelogue of the Naked General) — is widely known as a gifted Japanese artist with a disability, he is far from being the only one.
Death-row art shown to lawmakers
Some 60 pieces of art by inmates on death row were displayed in a Diet members' office building Tuesday with the aim of getting lawmakers and their aides to take a harder look at capital punishment.
The one-day exhibition, sponsored by groups opposed to the death penalty, marked the 20th anniversary of a U.N. pact aimed at abolishing capital punishment, organizers said.

Big Farting Bull In Little China
Beijing’s burgeoning art district has a new symbol for its growing influence in the global art world -a giant farting bull.
Created by sculptor Chen Wenling, the 20-foot statue depicts, well, a big fiberglass bull that rams a devil figure with its horns while making whoopie so hard the devil crashes into a wall.

Born in Sapporo, Watanabe graduated from Nihon University in photography in 1975 and moved to Los Angeles, where he worked producing television commercials. He obtained an MBA from UCLA in 1993, but two years later his earlier interest in photography revived; from 2000 he has worked full time at photography.

Japan exhibits Sebastiao Salgado's Africa
The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography has displayed the latest collection of works by Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado.
The event exhibits Africa, which introduces 'the neglected continent' through the eyes of the photo-documentary pioneer.
The event displays about 100 photographs, which include some of Salgado's upcoming collection, Genesis, Artdaily reported.

Japan, World's Largest Outdoor Art Festival, Echigo-Tsumari Triennial
Japan's Echigo-Tsumari outdoor art festival is the world's largest. The Echigo-Tsumari Triennial opened last weekend with 350 artists from 38 countries participating. This is the fourth triennial and will run until Sept. 13 although many of the exhibits are permanent and can be viewed all year round.
