Ancient Plumbing Protects 600 Year Old Forbidden City Floods
Beijing was the most recent city last week to suffer from massive floods rocking northern China. Some say its the worst they’ve seen in nearly 60 years as hundreds are dead or missing. Total death toll thus far from this Summers floods are more than 500 as reported by some media outlets.
However, there’s one place last week that remained relatively flood-free which is the Forbidden City in Beijing. Because of the remarkable 600-year-old elaborate drainage system, flood waters flowed easily out of the city and into the river. You can even see ornamental dragon heads carved as funnels for excess water.
The wisdom of the Ancient Chinese far surpassed our modern technology in some ways.
