Nice story - thank you.
As far as I know another side effect of monosodium glutamate is its ability to desensitize your salt receptors (the one on your tongue). As a result you would like to add more and more salt to your food - not too good of an idea if you have high blood pressure or some other health conditions. So in general excessive use of the food additive is not recommended but it do make the food more tasty - no doubt about it :)
When I first got to Japan, it was common practice to hit tsukemonto (pickled whatever, which starts out quite salty) with a generous dash of Ajinomoto, followed with an equally generous splash of soy sauce. Quite stimulating, indeed.
I find that if I eat food with a lot of MSG I start to sweat and feel out of breath.
MSG is one food additive best avoided by everyone but unfortunately it's in common use in most Chinese restaurants! As much as I love Chinese food I do limit my visits.
