..where unemployed and homeless Japanese geeks move into cubicles in an internet café, paying about $500 a month for the privilege, including, I suppose, all the internet you can use...
the manager says "they are lonely people and they don't seem to want friends or company."

and don't forget there's usually a large collection of manga, soft porn mags and books. Some people use the internet cafe for a night stay rather than a hotel or expensive taxi ride home!
I'm not surprised considering how expensive it is to sign a lease for an apartment in Japan. Plus share accommodation doesn't seem to be common here, whereas it's a cheap alternative in other countries, especially for young people moving out of home for the first time.
It's now possible to rent a room in Tokyo the size of a small bed which comes equipped with fold away PC. Shared toilet down the hall! ¥30,000 no key/deposit!
¥30,000 is quite cheap, but not small amount of money for most cyber homeless as they are often day trippers. If they get some job, they sleep at the internet cafe for a night(about ¥2,000), otherwise they will sleep at park or elsewhere. They are at the bottom of poverty in big cities, not able to get out from it.
I think these new style rooms which landlords are making with the unemployed in mind, can be rented on a daily basis?
Is that ¥30,000 a night/week or month?
based on the "walk-in-walk-out" principle thats a steal! and there seems to be plenty of room for my inflatable girlfriends...
riki, that would be ¥30.000 per month of cause but I don't remember the exact daily rate?
